The most important fields are listed first: GPS location, camera or phone model, the date and time the photo was taken, lens, serial number, author and software. Below them you can open the full list of metadata blocks found in the file, such as EXIF, XMP, IPTC, text fields and embedded extra images.
Fields that can identify you or a place are highlighted.
What a photo can say about you
- Location
- GPS coordinates accurate to a few meters, often your home.
- Date and time
- When the photo was taken, down to the second.
- Device
- Phone or camera make and model, and sometimes its serial number.
- Software
- Which app or editor last saved the file.
- Author
- Names and copyright notes added by cameras or editing apps.
- Hidden extras
- Small preview images and depth or HDR data that phones attach.
Why use a viewer that runs in your browser
Many online EXIF viewers upload your photo to their server to read it. That is a strange trade if you are checking a private photo for private data. This viewer reads the file locally with JavaScript, so the photo never leaves your device.
Questions
Which files can I check?
JPEG, PNG, WebP and HEIC. Cleaning works for JPEG, PNG and WebP.
Why does my photo show no data?
Many apps and social networks strip metadata when you save or send a photo. If the file was downloaded from such an app, there may be nothing left to show.
Is the date always correct?
The viewer shows what the camera saved. If the camera clock was wrong, the date will be wrong too.
